What is ageing?
Ageing can be explained as a natural phenomenon and environmental process:
Natural, programmed by body
Certain genes are switched on or off, which lead to the expression of suppression of the respective protein, therefore affecting bodily functions.
The secretion or rate of secretion of hormones slow down.
The immune system weakens.
Environmental Errors
Wear and tear of cells, for example during a fall. As repair and division cannot keep pace, ageing speeds up.
There are many physical sources of free radicals, most notably food. They wear and tear the cells from inside unless neutralized.
Genetic mutations also increase with age, as do errors in genetic repair mechanisms.
What can happen when we age? The Human Growth Hormone (HGH, or somatotrophic hormone) is secreted by the pituitary gland in the brain. Just as its name means, it causes a child to grow. During ageing however, the levels of HGH fall. Those deficient in it experience weight gain, muscle loss, lethargy, general loss of interest.
We will also become more susceptible to common illnesses. The risk of conditions like stroke and cardiac arrest also increase from a combination of causes. Even a simple fall can be life threatening. Osteoporosis, an under diagnosed progressive condition, increase fracture risk. The wrinkles on our skin deepen and the texture of it becomes rough.
These physical symptoms make a debilitating and inevitable impact on the quality of life. A fracture could lead to bed-riddance; a stroke could lead to dependence on artificial life support; looking old can affect one's confidence; a general indifference to life not only as emotional impact, but can lead to increase risk of accidents due to loss of concentration.
How our Orchard Medical Programme can help you?
Our Vision
Is to reduce the effects of aging to maintain or improve your quality of life.
Our Strategy Everyone is an individual. Therefore, screening is necessary to analyze the medication needed and changes you need in your lifestyle.
After the screen, we will review and go through the results with you. The appropriate medicine and advice will be dispensed. Subsequently, you may be needed to come back for us to follow through and monitor your response.
Why should you come for the screen? Our health will definitely affect our quality of life and people around us hence its importance. Regular screening renders benefits like early detection. Many diseases are treatable but undetected. By the time the patient experiences symptoms, the condition may have already advanced to higher stages. He/She may then need higher drug doses or need to undergo more complicated and uncomfortable procedures.
What treatments to expect? You may be given health supplements to replenish what you lack, for example calcium or DHEA pills. If your pre-dominant problem lies in HGH deficiency, you will undergo HGH replacement therapy. The hormone injected is bio-identical so it does not lead to side effects. Or if obesity is your problem, we will arrange a suitable weight control programme.
The screen will also reveal presence or risk of diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, and the health of your organs, like the liver and kidney. We will advise you accordingly if changes are necessary to your lifestyle or whether you need further tests.
If you would like to look better, we will enroll you in our aesthetic programmes. This includes skin rejuvenation using techniques like IPL and laser.
